Doctorate of Philosophy

A PhD (doctor of philosophy) the highest level of academic or professional degreed programs, holds a position of leadership in a field of study or the educational management administration.

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the highest level of academic or professional degreed programs. The holder may be qualified to teach in a specific field of education, hold a position of leadership in a field of study or be part of the educational management administration. The PhD degree follows the completion of a Master’s degree, adding additional years of education and independent research before graduating.

Differences between a PhD, PsyD, and EdD are specific to areas of education, each having specific applications and functions:

  • PhDs graduate with a Doctorate in Philosophy in Clinical Psychology, received through clinical training and educational or counseling psychology studies.
  • PsyDs graduate with a Doctorate of Psychology in psychological testing, evaluations and therapy in normal practices
  • EdDs graduate with a Doctorate of Education, most universities focus on knowledge and skills related to the practice of education.

Generally, universities offer one or the other; rarely both in doctorate curriculums; assigning EdD studies in applied research and PhD in theoretical research.

Entry Admissions

Entry requirements vary for university doctorate degree programs.  School curriculums require a minimum of three years training with most students completing the PhD in four years, carrying a full time attendance schedule. At the end of the study, a thesis is written and presented to an academic panel for review before graduation.

Purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate field knowledge, gained through academic studies and independent research.  PhD in clinical psychology requires the thesis, and clinical practice comprised of two years of supervised internship, with one year being completed prior to entry of a doctorate program by some schools. On completion, a national and state license examination is needed before practicing professionally.

Studies

Campus or online programs have students working with faculty members assigned as advisors or mentors. During the first two years, courses include research methods, and statistical analysis.  School work is selected according to the chosen field of practice including training experiences in the selected areas. Experiences are acquired in laboratories, research clinics or funded research programs.

Always on completion; comprehensive tests and examinations determine proficiency and expertise in the area of study. Doctorate students should be willing to study and work long hours with little financial compensation.  Students should also review the time commitments, prior to opting for entry into an accredited doctorate program.
